Colosseum

Piazza del Colosseo, Rome, 00184

The Basics

As the second most popular attraction in Italy after only the Vatican, the Colosseum hosts some 4 million annual visitors, meaning that long lines are nearly inevitable without a skip-the-line tour. Choose from a number of tours suited to any age or interest, such as a Colosseum underground tour that heads beneath the arena floor to explore a network of passages; a small-group guided tour of the third tier; or a night tour that offers an eery experience and relief from the daytime heat. Consider group tours, self-guided audio tours, or private tours to gain an understanding of this well-preserved ancient Roman amphitheater and its historical importance.

Excellent tour and guide
My husband and grown children thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the Colosseum and Forum. Our guide (really sorry I didn’t hear his name!) was extremely knowledgeable and informative. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Rome. Highly recommended.

Skip The Line Colosseum & Roman Forum Admission Tickets
This was an amazing exprience and my first time doing a self guided tour. Buying the tickets in advance was so helpful and let me cut a huge line. I also got a free upgrade at the colosseum and got to see the gladiator stage!

Ultimate Colosseum Tour, Roman Forum & Palatine Hill
Guisseppi was awesome. Could have told a few more stories but he was nice. Colosseum is absolutely worth it and taking a private tour is a must. If you come in hot weather PLEASE bring a lot of water. The first two hours are all outside and you bake!

Colosseum Underground Small Group Tour with Roman Forum & Gladiator Arena
Giuseppe really brought the Colosseum to life, making it easy to visualize what it must have been like for people and animals alike. The tour was well paced and the perfect balance between guided and independent time.

Gladiator Gate and Arena Floor Special Access Colosseum Tour
The visit to the Colosseum was amazing! The guided tour with Siri (Sirena) was exceptional. She was very engaging and very knowledgeable. We were there during the excruciating heat wave but Siri did her best to direct her tour to spots and stops that minimized sun exposure. She did a great job in her delivering so much information and making ancient history sound fascinating. We really enjoyed this tour. No doubt the access to the gladiator/arena was completely worth it. Highly recommend.

Colosseum Underground and Ancient Rome Semi-Private Tour MAX 6 PEOPLE GUARANTEED
Perhaps the best tour I have ever taken. Our guide Patrizia WAS OUTSTANDING!!! She was knowledgeable and engaging. She did what the best guides do. Took the time to get to know us and tailored the tour to our interests. She took us to places not on the normal tour when she realized were fairly knowledgeable of Roman history. The underground of the Colosseum is A MUST SEE. GREAT TOUR, GREAT GUIDE. JUST GO!

The Colosseum at night,- a Must Do!

Vip Colosseum Under the Moon with Underground and Arena Access
This is absolutely a must-do. Being at the colosseum in the evening under the moonlight is a once in a lifetime experience. It is also great on very hot days as it is much cooler. The headphones did not work great if you were far from the guide but otherwise a very special, moving experience during a time when the Colosseum is not packed with a lot of other tourists. .

Colosseum Underground Night Tour - a MUST DO!

Colosseum Night Tour
We had a fantastic guide, Darius, who was also an archeologist. He did an excellent job providing insights into the design, building and purpose of each aspect of the Colesseum Underground. We did the standard Colosseum Tour during the day, which was nice but under a Super Moon and having the entire Colosseum practically to ourselves made for a very memorable evening. Don't miss this!

Skip the Line: Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill Tour
This tour saved a lot of time which is limited when visiting Rome. We walked into the Roman forum, Palatine Hill, and Colosseum with no wait and our entire time (3 hours) was all focused on seeing the sites we paid to visit. Our guide was knowledgeable about the sites.

When to Get There

Since the Colosseum is most crowded during the middle of the day, begin or end your Rome tour with a visit first thing in the morning or just before last entry (which is an hour before closing time) in the late afternoon. Alternatively, choose a night tour for a unique, less crowded experience. Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, while the site receives fewer crowds in November through February, aside from the Christmas and New Year holidays.
